A tragic and unusual accident has claimed the life of Ray Hartmann, a prominent media figure and respected journalist, who died after two tires detached from a semi-truck and crashed through his vehicle.
The incident occurred on April 23 along Interstate 64 in west St. Louis County. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the semi-truck—a Volvo VNL—lost two tires, which became airborne and struck the roof of Hartmann’s Chevrolet Bolt. The tires penetrated the vehicle, fatally injuring him.
Emergency responders transported Hartmann to Mercy Hospital St. Louis, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Hartmann, 73, was widely known for his contributions to journalism. He founded the Riverfront Times and played a key role in revitalizing St. Louis Magazine. Over the years, he became a recognizable voice in regional media, including his long-running presence on the public affairs program “Donnybrook.”
He is survived by his wife, Kerri, and their two children, Ben and Brielle.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues, friends, and the broader journalism community, remembering him as a sharp-minded commentator, a dedicated professional, and a deeply valued voice in St. Louis media.
The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Hartmann’s sudden passing marks the loss of a significant figure in local journalism, whose influence and legacy will continue to be felt for years to come.
