Police in Houston say a 10-year-old boy has been charged with murder in connection with the death of 13-year-old Riley DeArmas.
According to the Houston Police Department, the incident stemmed from a fight between two groups at an apartment complex on February 4. During the altercation, Riley was stabbed and later transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities say the boy was initially detained at the scene and told investigators he acted in self-defense. He was released at the time while the investigation continued. Charges were formally filed on March 31, and the suspect was later arrested in North Carolina.
Riley’s mother, Ashley DeArmas, described the arrest as both painful and relieving, expressing hope for justice while acknowledging the tragedy involving children on both sides.
She remembered her daughter as lively and full of personality, saying she misses her every day.
The case remains under investigation.
