An American millionaire and experienced big-game hunter has died after being trampled by elephants during a hunting expedition in Gabon.
Ernie Dosio, a 75-year-old vineyard owner from Lodi, California, was on a safari in the Lopé National Park when the incident occurred. Reports say he was tracking a rare antelope species known as the yellow-backed duiker when he and his guide encountered a herd of forest elephants.
The group—made up of five female elephants and a calf—reportedly became agitated and charged. The professional guide was struck first and seriously injured, losing his weapon in the process. Moments later, the elephants turned on Dosio, who was left with little chance to escape. The attack was described as sudden and overwhelming.
Dosio was widely known in international hunting circles and was a member of the Sacramento Safari Club. Over the years, he had amassed an extensive collection of trophies from hunts across Africa and the United States, including lions, leopards, and elephants.
Officials say the U.S. Embassy in Gabon is working with local authorities to arrange the return of his remains to California.
The incident highlights the unpredictable dangers of wildlife encounters, particularly in dense forest environments where visibility is limited and animals may react defensively to perceived threats.
