We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Nigel Dunnett, whose influence and vision have left an enduring mark on the landscapes at Trentham. Over the past decade, Nigel worked closely with the team to help shape and curate the lakeside planting schemes, bringing with him a thoughtful and innovative approach that balanced beauty, ecology, and long-term sustainability.
Nigel’s work at Trentham reflected his belief that landscapes should be both visually striking and environmentally resilient. Through carefully designed planting schemes, he helped create spaces that support biodiversity while remaining practical and low-maintenance. Visitors experience his legacy daily through vibrant, diverse plantings that not only enhance the natural beauty of the gardens but also provide habitats for a wide range of insects and wildlife.
His ability to combine creativity with practicality set him apart. Nigel demonstrated that ambitious planting design could succeed when rooted in an understanding of local conditions, climate, and ecological needs. His work continues to serve as a model for sustainable landscape design. During his most recent visit in November 2025, Nigel collaborated with the team on the east lakeside, contributing to the development of an innovative scheme near the Otters carving.
This project showcased his forward-thinking approach, incorporating a dynamic mix of shrubs, herbaceous plants, and bulbs suited for challenging, sun-exposed conditions. Nigel Dunnett’s legacy is now woven into the fabric of Trentham. His influence will continue to shape the gardens for years to come. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those inspired by his remarkable work.
