Fire crews in Española are continuing cleanup efforts after the Riverside Fire burned approximately 44 acres and destroyed several structures before evacuations were lifted Saturday evening.
According to the Española Fire Department, the fire broke out Friday night around 8 p.m. in the bosque area and quickly spread due to strong winds and extremely dry conditions.
Fire Chief John Wickersham said the blaze damaged at least four structures, including a mobile home, a trailer, and two sheds. He described the fire as wind-driven and “fast-moving,” noting that crews struggled to contain its rapid spread.
At its peak, the fire forced mandatory evacuations in nearby areas, with residents temporarily displaced as flames moved close to Riverside Drive and nearby businesses, including areas near the Santa Claran Hotel Casino.
As of Saturday evening, officials confirmed the fire is about 40% contained, and evacuation orders have been lifted. Some residents have begun returning to their homes.
Emergency crews are now focusing on containment and monitoring hotspots, with aerial support expected to assist in suppression efforts. Officials have warned that shifting winds could still pose risks in the coming days.
No fatalities have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
