A student-athlete from Texas A&M University–Texarkana has died after collapsing during a track and field competition in New Orleans.
Graycen Vargo, a junior computer science major from Dallas, suffered a medical emergency on Friday while competing at the Red River Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, hosted by Xavier University of Louisiana.
According to university officials, Vargo collapsed during the event and received immediate medical attention at the scene. He was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Vargo was in his first year competing with the Eagles’ track and field team after previously running at Jacksonville College. He had recently been recognized with the Eagle Excellence Award for Cross Country, honoring student-athletes who demonstrate strong character, academic achievement, and a positive impact on their community.
University President Ross Alexander expressed condolences, stating that Vargo was a respected student and a valued member of both the cross country and track teams.
The university community is mourning his loss, remembering him for his dedication, character, and contributions both on and off the field.
